My GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT grandparents were Theodore May and Minerva May of Delhi, Louisiana. As handed-down in our family narration, Theodore\'s name was originally Theodore Cavendish, a White Englishman from London. He moved to the United States with his father. When the father returned to England, Theodore, having developed a love for this country, stayed behind and joined a slave caravan owned by the May family. Later, he took the name of May, because he was treated as their son. He became a successful blacksmith in the May family of Alabama.
Minerva Simmons, a slender dark woman of the Black Hawk Indian Nation, was from Jamaica, West Indies. Her mother Lucretia Simmons, worked on a banana boat in Jamaica. Being a widoe, and being told that money grew on trees in the United States, Lucretia moved her family here. Upon arriving, they encountered slavery and were separated and sold. Theodore eventually paid $800 to free Minerva and they were united in matrimony through the common tradition of \"jumping the broom\" in the mid-1800s. The couple subsequently moved to Meridian, Mississippi near Enterprise and later to Delhi, Louisiana. They had 10 sons\"
