Salone "Sonny" May Jr.

1934-08-25 2010-12-19
Salone "Sonny" May, Jr. was born on August 25, 1934 to the union of Maude and Salone May in Delhi, LA. He departed this life on December 19, 2010 peacefully in his sleep. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Burnell May, sister Wendell "Wendy" Pritchett, and son Marvin "Pee Wee" May.

Sonny was a member of New Fellowship Baptist Church in Delhi, LA where he accepted Christ at an early age. He relocated to Seattle in 1953 where he would meet the love of his life, Melzena Whitehead one year later.

Melzena and Sonny were married on July 30, 1955 and became parents to their four children: Deborah, Salone, III., Marvin, and Regina. They shared a love unlike any other. They were there for each other through good and difficult times.

Sonny began his career at the Seattle Water Department in 1955 and continued his service for 41 years. He took much pride in his work and was often the "go to" man for several of his coworkers. He was the first African American man employed by the Seattle Water Department. In addition to working at the Seattle Water Department, Sonny simultaneously worked other part time jobs…doing whatever it took to ensure the well being of his family.

Sonny enjoyed fishing, bowling, and spending time with his family. He held a very quiet, caring and gentle spirit. Even during the decline of his health, he was most concerned about the welfare of his family. His radiant personality, gentle spirit, and beautiful smile will be greatly missed.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Melzena May, daughters Debbie and Regina May (LaTeena), son Salone May, III, brothers Herman, Cleophas, Calvin (Ora) and Fred May, sisters Ora Lee Jones, Barbara Watts (Calvin), Thadeth Smith (James) and a host of grandchildren, family and friends.

The family of Sonny would like to thank the staff of Virginia Mason, Group Health Hospice Care, and Washington Care Center for their care and kindness over the last few months.
